Cholesterol:

What is cholesterol, good/bad cholesterol, how to reduce cholesterol, which oil to fight cholesterol? So many questions around cholesterol, find answers here!

Let's quickly review, to better know the cholesterol:

The definition:

Cholesterol is a type of lipid.

It is produced by the liver and brought by the food.

What is HDL and LDL?

LDL: bad cholesterol (technical memo: L for looser ;))

HDL: Good cholesterol (H is for high)

Why worry about your cholesterol:

It is essential for our cells, but when it is in excess, it can have harmful effects.

In summary: If we bring too much cholesterol (therefore too much fat) to our body through food, it will accumulate in our arteries and can create a cardiovascular risk.

How to know if you have cholesterol?

There is only one solution: a blood test.

What is the normal level of cholesterol?

LDL < 1.60g/L

HLD>0.40g/L

And that's when you start asking yourself questions at mealtime:

Which cake to eat when you have cholesterol, which yogurt for cholesterol, which cheese good for cholesterol?

Don't panic, some simple rules:

Eat a varied and balanced diet of course, favor the Cretan diet (fatty fish, eggs, olive and nut oil, seasonal vegetables), avoid fatty dairy products, and any highly processed product. Practice regular physical activity such as walking (see previous post on walking and its benefits).

Think of whole grains when you buy bread, or cook pasta or rice.

Prefer lean meats like chicken.

And finally, think of legumes (lentils, peas), and for snacks, nothing better than walnuts, almonds, flax seeds or sunflower seeds.
